The SAMRA Board 2018/2019 is appointed


Monday 6 August 2018, at the SAMRA AGM, marked the conclusion of the Directorship of SAMRA Chairman 2017/2018, Alexan Carrilho. She has served SAMRA for two terms, for the second time – that is 12 years of service over the last 14 years! Alexan was in charge off Membership in the SAMRA Council back in the day, and most recently represented large suppliers on the SAMRA Board since the SAMRA restructure in 2013. Her day-job is Africa, Middle East & Pakistan Operations Training & Process Manager at Kantar. She holds a Masters in Sociology from UJ and a Diploma in Management Practice from UCT, and brought her knowledge and many years of experience to bear in her leadership roles at SAMRA. Those who know Alexan will not need reminding of her exceptional work ethic, extraordinary commitment, and passion for all things research. She has worked on supply-side since 2000, first as survey statistician at Stats SA, and then progressed from Sampling Manager, to Business Unit Director: Operations, to Head of Quality and Information Security, to Business Unit Director: Business Excellence & Commercial Support, and finally to Research Excellence Director (ASI) at Ipsos, before joining Kantar in March 2016. With her abundance of skills and experience, it is no wonder that Alexan has chaired SAMRA twice (2013/2014 and 2017/2018) and she will be sorely missed at SAMRA Board level. Alexan has promised to stay involved with SAMRA, and we will keep her to this promise!

Taking over from Alexan as the SAMRA Director representing Large Suppliers is Dr. Henk Pretorius, co-founder and CEO of Columinate. Henk is also SAMRA Treasurer. Henk has built a successful digital agency from stratch in just 10 years, creating innovative full-service online and mobile research solutions. In his own words: “I do, teach, write and talk about marketing and psychological research”. Henk is responsible for strategically leading the expansion of Columinate, consulting on key client projects and developing proprietary research tools in their R&D function. He holds a PhD in cognitive psychology and lectures in research methods at postgraduate level. You can regularly spot Henk speaking at conferences, watch him on SABC TV News, CNBC Africa, YFM, Classic FM, and 702, or read his words in Destiny Man and Times Live.

The newly elected SAMRA Board member representing Large Clients is Kanyisa Ngqukuvana. Kanyisa is an experienced insights professional with extensive strategy and financial services experience. She describes herself as “a voice for the consumer in the boardroom”. She started her career as Research Executive at Relationship Marketing, some 24 years ago. She then joined Stanard Bank as Insights Analyst, moved to FNB as Head: Market Research/Competitive Intelligence, and later Senior Strategy Analyst, before being appointed Senior Insights & Research Manager at African Bank in 2007. She went back to Standard Bank in 2010 where she is now Head: Market Research Personal and Business Banking. Her SAMRA Board Election Statement is as follows:

With more than 20 years in the market/marketing research industry, I believe I can contribute a lot towards SAMRA goals and objectives. This will be a way of giving back to the industry before one exits it by helping SAMRA in areas where it has challenges. I also believe that between the MBA that I am currently finalising and the GIBS Female Leadership Program that covers corporate governance, board leadership, strategic thinking and authentic leadership, these will also help me to look at things with a broader view than just market research.

As a Head Market Research for Africa Regions, Corporate and Investment Banking and Wealth I believe I am the right candidate to represent “Large Research Users” in the board. 23 years of my research experience has been in the “large research user” space and I currently have 6 researchers in my team. I am also fortunate with the fact that I will be able to bring not just the South African market understanding to the board but understanding of Africa as a whole.

I know that in return I will also have the opportunity of learning new skills whilst elevating my standing in the market research society and enhancing my profile.

A little bit about me, my key values are honesty, respect for others, humility and my great interpersonal skills enable these. I am passionate about changing the lives of those less fortunate around me, learning from others and sharing the knowledge I have.”

Kanyisa takes over from Sheila Akinnusi, whose term also ended at the AGM. Sheila, her husband Tim and daughter Isabella recenty welcomed Naomi into the world! Sheila is Senior Manager – Consumer Marketing and Insights at Nedbank (she was previously Manager – Consumer Insights and Market Segmentation). Before joining Nedbank, she was Strategic Marketing Research Project Director at KLA on supply-side, and Customer Experience and Insights Manager (Retail and Private Banking) at Standard Bank (she joined the bank as Graduate Management Trainee in 2005). Sheila holds a Masters in Strategic Marketing from Edinburgh Business School and a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration from GIBS. Sheila was a key strategic contributor to SAMRA Board discussions and we will miss her no-nonsense attitude and valuable inputs.

Prof. Yolanda Jordaan was elected to the SAMRA Board as the representative for Academia. Yolanda is a full professor and Head of the Department of Marketing Management at the University of Pretoria. She holds a B Com (Personnel Management), B Com (Hons), M Com and DCom (Marketing) from the University of Pretoria. Her main research interests are information privacy, service marketing as well as direct marketing. Her work (both teaching and research) has received several awards from both academia and industry. She was the first academic to receive a reward from the direct marketing industry for her contribution to marketing education in South Africa. Yolanda has lectured at universities in the United States, Australia and the Netherlands. She is a recipient of the Mellon Foundation Award for research excellence. The university has also honoured her with an exceptional young researcher award and a Laureate Award for education innovation. She is also one of the founding members of the South African Consumer Satisfaction Index which was launched in South Africa in September 2012. Her SAMRA Board Election Statement is as follows:

“I see my role as a SAMRA director to support the growth of the research industry and to ensure that stakeholder value is achieved by ensuring that the industry has effective systems and processes that offer value to the industry. As an academic, with a strong focus on scientific research, I believe that I can play a role in contributing to the research skills development needs of the industry, or at least contribute to this important conversation. It is important to get appropriate input into the learning system for the research industry. I believe my passion for research and my contributions to scientific research will support the activities of SAMRA.”

It is our pleasure to officially welcome Yolanda on the SAMRA Board, and we are looking forward to her contributions and guidance.
